Seeing as he picked up the prize for Best Mixtape at the VO5 NME Awards 2018, we thought it only right to ask Avelino what goes into making the perfect mix. Watch our video interview with the rapper above.
Tipped among the NME 100 as one of the most essential new artists to watch this year, the Tottenham rapper released his triumphant mixtape ‘No Bullshit’ in October 2017. It features cameos from Dave and MJ Cole, while Avelino collaborated with Jason Julian, Jay Prince, and Raf Riley on its production.
Speaking to NME on the red carpet ahead of the ceremony, Avelino told us what makes a great mixtape, truly and genuinely great.
“It’s just an artist stamping their quality,” he said. “The idea of a mixtape comes from rappers and artists trying to put their style on different beats with lyrical exercise at the same time. That’s what it is and I think I’ve done that.”
Asked about his plans for 2018, Avelino replied: “More music, more greatness, more wins man. I’m in this for the long haul.
“I’m working on music, so whatever that formulates into… Whatever will be, will be.”
After receiving the award from Professor Green, who paid tribute to the winner’s lyrical skills, Avelino said: “I’m grateful. I didn’t expect to win today, just a night out for me and my friends. I’m going to celebrate this one.”
