Islamists urge cancellation of singer's show
Islamists in Malaysia are urging their government to cancel an upcoming Avril Lavigne concert because they believe the singer’s moves are “too sexy”.
The youth wing of the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party said that they don’t want their teenagers influenced by her performance.
“It is considered too sexy for us. … It’s not good for viewers in Malaysia,” party official Kamarulzaman Mohamed told the Associated Press. “We don’t want our people, our teenagers, influenced by their performance. We want clean artists, artists that are good role models.”
Lavigne is scheduled to begin her tour of Asia in Kuala Lumpur on August 29. The Malaysian government has not yet determined whether her gig will be allowed to go ahead as planned.
Several female artists including Gwen Stefani and the Pussycat Dolls have run into trouble in Malaysia, which requires all performers to be covered from knees to chest and refrain from jumping, shouting, hugging and kissing on stage.
