Azealia Banks: ‘I no longer want to be a rapper’

'212' star says she wants to be a 'vocalist' instead – and has also quit her Twitter account

Azealia Banks has insisted that she no longer wants to be seen as a rapper.

Posting on her Tumblr site, the ‘212’ star claimed that she wanted to be perceived as a “vocalist” instead – and also revealed she was deleting her Twitter account as it made her “too accessible”.

Banks, who will release her new mixtape ‘Fantasea’ on July 4, published a post titled ‘No Longer Wishing To Be A Rapper’ and added:

I never was… and as soon as I started paying to bullshit urban media, I started getting myself in trouble. From now I’m a vocalist, and will not be associating myself with the “rap game”… or whatever the fuck that means.

Discussing her decision to quit Twitter, meanwhile, she added: “No more twitter for me… it makes me entirely too accessible. Catch me on tumblr… it’ll be more interesting.”

Banks recently unveiled a brand new track, ‘Jumanji’. Scroll down to listen to the song. The track, which is produced by Hudson Mohawke and Nick Hook, has been taken from the forthcoming mixtape, which comes ahead of her debut album ‘Broke With Expensive Taste’, due this autumn.

Last month Banks cancelled almost all of her summer festival appearances because of recording commitments. Banks is currently working on her debut LP and will play Reading and Leeds Festivals and BBC Radio 1’s Hackney Weekend. Her October UK headline tour will still go ahead as scheduled.
