Azealia Banks signs a record deal with Universal Music

The NME Cool List winner takes to Twitter to express her delight

Azealia Banks has signed a record deal with Universal Music.

The rapper, who was crowned Number One in NME‘s Cool List last year, took to Twitter to announce the news earlier today (January 18).

She wrote:

God just dealt me a new hand today a reaaaaaaaaaaallllly good hand. I am now officially signed to Universal Music.


Banks also said her debut LP is likely to drop in May or June. She was previously signed to XL Recordings.

The rapper is currently working on the record in London and New York with Paul Epworth.

Before her London show, Azealia Banks will appear as the opening act on the 2012 NME Awards Tour. Two Door Cinema Club will headline the tour, with Metronomy and Tribes also on the bill.

The tour kicks off in Glasgow at the O2 Academy on February 8 – it then takes in dates in Newcastle, Manchester, Nottingham, Leeds, Norwich, Birmingham, Cardiff, Bristol and Bournemouth, before finishing up at London’s O2 Academy Brixton on February 25.
