Azealia Banks criticises Kendrick Lamar for Ferguson comments

Banks has previously clashed with Iggy Azalea

Azealia Banks has dubbed Kendrick Lamar‘s recent comments on the shooting death of Michael Brown at the hands of a police officer as the “dumbest shit I’ve ever heard a black man say”.

In a recent interview with Billboard, Lamar spoke about the protests sparked by Brown’s death, racial tensions in America and his own previous exchanges with police officers.

Acknowledging the historic strain between police and African-American communities, Lamar said: “I wish somebody would look in our neighbourhood knowing that it’s already a situation, mentally, where it’s fucked up. What happened to [Michael Brown] should’ve never happened. Never. But when we don’t have respect for ourselves, how do we expect them to respect us? It starts from within. Don’t start with just a rally, don’t start from looting – it starts from within.”

Taking to Twitter, Banks has criticised Lamar, not only for the comments but for giving them to ‘white publication’ Billboard. “There are things in society that benefit a select few of us. fine… But don’t put down the rest by saying they don’t respect themselves,” posted Banks, who didn’t mention Lamar by name but did directly quote one of his remarks.

“HOW DARE YOU open ur face to a white publication and tell them that we don’t respect ourselves…. Speak for your fucking self,” she added. All of Banks tweets on Lamar’s interview are below.

The 23-year-old Harlemite has also clashed with Iggy Azalea numerous times in recent months, criticising the Australian rapper for not commenting on the protests in Ferguson and New York following the deaths of Brown and Eric Garner. She returned to the subject in an interview with Hot 97’s Ebro in the Morning last month, becoming visibly emotional when asserting that white artists are treated differently to black artists in America.

“I feel like, in this country, whenever it comes to our things, like black issues or black politics or black music or whatever, there’s always this undercurrent of kinda like a ‘Fuck you,'” Banks said. “There’s always a ‘Fuck y’all niggas. Y’all don’t really own shit. Y’all don’t have shit.’ That Macklemore album wasn’t better than the Drake record. That Iggy Azalea shit isn’t better than any fucking black girl that’s rapping today.”
