Soul heavyweight BARRY WHITE is to cash in on the success Black Legend have enjoyed with his track ‘YOU SEE THE TROUBLE WITH ME’, by releasing a reworking of a track called‘ONCE, TWICE, THREE TIMES A LADY’ with hip-hop producer JASON NEVINS.
White originally covered the song, a soul classic by The Commodores, with The Gap Band during the early eighties. It is this version that Nevins will rework.
White had refused to allow Italian duo Black Legend permission to use his original vocal. He now stands to lose out on thousands in performance royalties as Black Legend brought in sound-a-like Elroy Powell, and the resultant hit is currently at number one in the UK.
White has claimed his change of heart is because he feels the “kids really dig” Black Legend‘s version.
“At first I heard the Black Legend track and thought it was going nowhere,” he said, “I didn’t want my voice being used on it, it was cheap and had no soul. Now I’ve seen that the kids really dig it, I thought I would give them a taste of the real thing.”
He added that he wanted to work with Jason Nevins because he “had to work with the real guy who used those Run DMC samples”.
The track will be released through Sony on August 12.
