BBC Radio 1 is bringing the weekend forward with new schedule changes

The weekend is starting on Fridays...

BBC Radio 1 has announced details of a new schedule that will see the station’s weekend schedule beginning on a Friday.

The shake-up will see Greg James, Nick Grimshaw and Clara Amfo going down to four shows a week.

Grimshaw, who traditionally hosts the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show, will see his Friday slot being taken up by regular weekend hosts Alice Levine and Dev.

Claro Amfo, meanwhile, will be replaced by newcomer Maya Jama, and Radio 1 veteran Scott Mills will now host the chart show.

“The weekend will start here at Radio 1 on a Friday morning giving our young audience that feel-good factor a day early”, BBC Radio 1 controller Ben Cooper said.

“It’s our job at Radio 1 to reinvent the way young people listen to the radio, to disrupt traditional thinking and to look for new ways in which to grow audiences.”

The new schedule will come into force from June.

Last month, Ofcom also ordered Radio 1 to play more music from up and coming artists.

The ruling follows recent proposals from Ofcom which were introduced to ensure that Radio 1 and Radio 2 were playing new music at peak listening times, in order to ensure that they provide a distinctive change from other commercial stations.

Specifically, the popular must station’s daytime programming must include at least 50% new music, including  “a significant proportion from new and emerging UK artists”.
