Beastie Boys’ Ad-Rock says LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy owes him $150 for breaking his fridge

Hip-hop pioneer accuses LCD man of not stumping up cash for repairs

Beastie Boys‘ member Ad-Rock has claimed that LCD Soundsystem main man James Murphy owes him $150 for breaking his fridge.

Ad-Rock – real name Adam Horovitz – was being interviewed by Vulture at a screening of the film Frances Ha, directed by Noah Baumbach, when he spotted Murphy walking past.

“There’s James Murphy. He owes me $150,” he said. “Well, he stayed at my apartment a long time ago and broke the refrigerator and didn’t get it fixed. I had to fix it.”

Asked how Murphy had broken the fridge, Ad-Rock replied: “I don’t know! It was just broken. He stayed at my place, and I moved back in and the refrigerator didn’t work. I was like, ‘Dude, what’s up with the refrigerator?’ He was like ‘Oh yeah!’ What kinda shit is that?”

Last month, it was revealed that Ad-Rock and Mike D had signed a deal to release their memoirs in 2015 after signing a deal with Random House imprint, Spiegel & Grau. The book is currently untitled and that it is unlikely to follow the structure of a traditional biography, focusing instead on a “pastiche of voices, images, irreverent humor and pop-culture reference points”. The book will be edited by Sacha Jenkins, a hip-hop journalist, and will be loosely structured as an oral history of the group from their beginnings in the music industry to the death of Adam Yauch.

Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch of Beastie Boys died in 2012. Yauch was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 and succumbed to the disease on May 4, 2012, aged 47.

Meanwhile, it was recently revealed that Mike D of the Beastie Boys has served over 19,000 free meals to New Yorkers affected by last year’s devastating Hurricane Sandy.

The rapper – real name Michael Diamond – has been operating a food truck in Brooklyn called Rockaway Plate Lunch since October 2012 with restaurant owner Robert McKinley. The truck has given away thousands of healthy free meals to victims of the severe weather.

In April of this year, meanwhile, James Murphy reaffirmed the fact that LCD Soundsystem have split and will not be reforming any time soon. Murphy, who called time on the band in April 2011, said: “I fully respect and appreciate that people miss us as a band – it’s a huge compliment but I also realise that we the band are just friends and we make things together and eat food together, and still all go out and do things, just not all together as LCD.”
