Reef have been working with Beck‘s dad on their new album, which comes out in April and is preceded by new single ‘I’ve Got Something To Say’, out on March 29 on S2.
The new single is backed with other new tracks ‘Foot One’, ‘Buried’ and ‘Who You Are’, which is also featured on the new, as-yet untitled album.
Beck‘s dad, David Campbell, did the string arrangements on a number of tracks. Reef bassist Jack Bessant told NME: “He looks a bit like Beck, too!” Jack continued to give the low-down on the new Reef album, but said pinning down a name for the new release was harder than actually recording it.
“We’ve got a list of titles, but because we’re quite a democratic band, that sometimes makes the final choice a bit difficult!” Other tracks on the album include ‘Wandering’ ‘Metro’ ‘Love Feeder’ ‘Moaner Snap’ ‘Spooky’ ‘Electric Sunday’ ‘Back In My Place’ ‘Funny Feeling’ ‘New Bird’ ‘Locked Inside’ ‘Hiding’ ‘Sweetie’
Jack told NME that the album showed a more mature Reef, but they’d still had fun with their sound, using slide guitars on some tracks, and giving a filmic feel to others.
“We’ve always been a band that have not been set on one style. If we come up with an idea and we enjoy it, we just do it. This is a real mixture of feelings and emotions. We’ve all been swapping around our instruments too, and I sing on one song. It’s not all strict rock music!”
Reef recorded the album over the latter half of last year in Los Angeles with producer George Drakoulias, who produced their last album, ‘Glow’. The location gave the band ample time to indulge their passion for surfing when they weren’t slaving away in the studio, Jack joked.

Got a suggestion for the title? Should they just call it ‘Reef III’ and have done with it? Have your say. Post a message on Angst!
