Beck recruits Thurston Moore and Tortoise to cover Yanni album

Record Club is back for a new covers album

Beck has recruited Thurston Moore and Tortoise to cover Greek composer Yanni‘s 1994 album ‘Live At The Acropolis‘ as the next installment in his Record Club project.

The Record Club records a cover album in a single day with no rehearsal and then posts tracks on Beck.com.

The musician explains the odd choice of album on his website, stating Yanni‘s album came to mind when he caught a TV special of the show “that was played repeatedly on PBS through-out the mid-90s”.

According to Rolling Stone , Thurston Moore provides his own lyrics throughout the first track ‘Santorini’, which Beck describes as providing “an added urgency and pathos”.

‘Santorini’ is already on Beck‘s site, with a new track set to be posted every week.

Tortoise will only appear on a few tracks later in the album with Beck‘s site hinting “several studio musician heavyweights were brought in to read a heavily doctored score with interpolations of everything from Stravinsky to Shania Twain“.

For last year’s Record Store Day, the two musicians split a seven-inch for which Beck covered ‘Green Light’ and Sonic Youth performed ‘Pay No Mind (Snoozer)’.

Previously albums covered by The Record Club include INXS‘Kick’, Skip Spence’s ‘Oar’, and ‘The Velvet Underground & Nico’.
