The star says his plans were "tripped up by technicalities"...

BECK has called off the competition in which fans were given the chance to win his pet rabbit ROCKET, after plans were “tripped up by technicalities”.

The singer offered the chance to adopt his pet rabbit as part of a contest held in honour of the DVD release of his most recent album ‘Sea Change’. The package ties a different video to each of the tracks on the album and Rocket appears in the clip for ‘Lonesome Tears’.

In a statement on his official Beck said: “I wanted to apologise to everyone who had either taken part in or been upset by our recent efforts to find the best possible home for Rocket. As too often happens with the best intentions, the plans got tripped up by technicalities.”

He added: “We thought we had made every precaution and secured every necessary clearance and authorisation, but it’s better not to take chances and just give Rocket up to an appropriate and certified rescue organisation.

“I hope everyone understands that we honestly wanted nothing more than the best possible home for Rocket and that we did everything humanly possible to do that. Thanks to everyone who contributed essays,” Beck said.

Rocket will now be put in the care of Pasadena Humane Society as part of the ASPCA’s ‘Adopt-A-Rescued-Rabbit Month’.

Beck said: “We’re happy to be participating in Adopt-A-Rescued-Rabbit month with the Pasadena Humane Society. We’re confident they’ll find Rocket the home he deserves and will do so with the most qualified and caring help possible.”

As previously reported on NME.COM, the competition was originally open to fans willing to offer Rocket a good home and were asked to write an essay explaining why Beck should allow Rocket into their custody.

Beck was to choose the winner himself, and four runners up were to receive signed copies of the ‘Sea Change’ DVD.
