The twee Scots popsters pay tribute to the local indie legends...

BELLE AND SEBASTIAN wowed a sold-out BOSTON crowd with covers of songs by local alternative legends the Dinosaur Jr and Pixies over the weekend.

The group played on Saturday night (May 4) at the Orpheum Theatre. Midway through their set frontman Stuart Murdoch asked the audience if anyone famous was in the crowd.

“Well Kim Deal isn’t here right? So, are there any girls who think they might be able to sing ‘Gigantic’? Anyone here in a Dinosaur Jr tribute band?” he said.

An audience member named Rachel was invited on stage to take vocals for a convincing version of the track. While she improvised the verses with shout-outs to her friends in the crowd-she was clearly familiar with the chorus of song.

The eight-member band, which was rounded out with a four piece violin section and a flautist, played a career-spanning set, including songs from their ‘Storytelling’ album, as well as older songs like ‘The Wrong Girl’, ‘Lazy Line Painter Jane’, ‘Seeing Other People’ and ‘Legal Man’.

Returning for an encore, Murdoch launched into an uncharacteristically loud and rock-sounding cover of [a][/a]’s ‘Freak Scene’, during which he kicked over an orchestra stand from which he was reading the lyrics.
