The pair performed ‘Freedom’ from Beyonce’s recent album ‘Lemonade’ at the show at Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater. Lamar rose up from the floor of the venue to join Beyonce.
With the UK leg of Beyonce’s ‘Formation’ tour starting in Sunderland tomorrow (June 28), there had been speculation that she would join Coldplay at their Glastonbury headline show on Sunday, but she chose to stay in the US for BET instead.
The ceremony also saw artists including Stevie Wonder, The Roots, Erykah Badu and Janelle Monae play tribute to Prince. Wonder and Toni Kelly sang ‘Take Me With U’, after The Roots, Badu and Bilal played ‘The Beautiful Ones’ and ‘Ballad Of Dorothy Parker’. Monae did a four-song medley comprised of ‘Kiss’, ‘Pop Life’, ‘I Would Die 4U’ and ‘Delirious’, while Jennifer Hudson sang ‘Purple Rain’. Maxwell performed ‘Nothing Compares 2U’, with the Prince tribute ending with Sheila E of Prince protégés Sheila E And The Devotion singing a Prince medley.
D’Angelo, who performed ‘Sometimes It Snows In April’ on US chatshow Late Night With Jimmy Fallon in April, was also scheduled to take part in the BET’s Prince tribute but didn’t appear.
