Beyonce’s pregnancy announcement causes sales surge of ‘4’

US sales of singer's new LP jump up after her happy news

Sales of Beyonce‘s fourth studio album ‘4’ have risen sharply since it was made public that the singer is expecting her first child.

The singer chose her appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) to announce that she is pregnant, telling the crowd during her performance of ‘Love On Top’: “I want you to feel the love that’s growing inside me”, confirming the pregnancy rumours that have swirled in recent months.

At the close of the song, the former Destiny’s Child star unbuttoned her jacket and rubbed her stomach, as her husband Jay-Z hugged his ‘Watch The Throne’ collaborator Kanye West in the audience.

According to Billboard, sales of ‘4’ have increased by 40 per cent since the VMAs, with the record looking as if it will ultimately sell over 40,000 in this week alone.

Lil Wayne meanwhile is likely to comfortably reach the top of the US charts, with his new album ‘Tha Carter IV’ predicted to sell 900,000 in its first week onsale, way ahead of Red Hot Chili Peppers‘ new LP ‘I’m With You’.
