Corinne Bailey Rae won two awards for Best UK Female and Best UK Newcomer.

The awards drew controversy for dropping the Best Jazz category for the first time in the ceremonies 11 year history.

During the ceremony Jazz musicians protested outside the Royal Albert Hall.

Saxophinist Courtney Pine told The Times: “Jazz was the stepping stone for rock ‘n’roll and rhytm and blues – all popular music. Folks have got to know that we have been excluded.”

A spokesman for the MOBO Awards said: “It is not always possible to carry all the categories that we would wish. Categories are constantly under review and sometimes rested for them to return in future shows.”
