Track comes from HBO's 'Catch The Throne' mixtape
Big Boi has premiered a fantasy-themed track in honour of cult TV show Game Of Thrones – click below to listen.
Titled ‘Mother Of Dragons’, the track sees the OutKast member rapping about Khaleesi, the name for wife of the Dothraki leader. Its chorus repeats the line “Dungeons, dragons, kings and queens“.
The track is taken from a new themed mixtape, ‘Catch The Throne’, which has a host of hip-hop and reggae artists producing music inspired by George RR Martin’s fantasy epic. Other artists on the mixtape, due to be released tomorrow (March 7), include Common, Daddy Yankee, Snow Tha Product, MC Bodega Bamz, Magazeen and Wale.
Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Wale drew similarities between the mixtape’s blend of fantasy-inspired lyrics and samples from the show with the way that Wu-Tang Clan appropriated kung fu samples. “Twenty years ago, Wu-Tang was breaking ground,” he said. “There are no limitations in hip-hop culture.”
Big Boi, who says he has begun reading the books so he can get ahead of the plot, told the paper: “I’m really happy, I get to be part of the process of one of my favorite shows.”
Lucy Martinez, a senior vice president at HBO, said the mixtape’s mix of hip-hop, Latin and reggae music is an attempt to appeal to “multicultural audiences”. “Our multicultural audiences are a very important part of our subscribers, and we don’t want to take them for granted,” she said.
