Billie Eilish thought Spice Girls were a made-up band

The rising star only realised the truth two years ago

Billie Eilish thought the Spice Girls were a completely made-up band until very recently.

The 17-year-old pop star, who released her debut album ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?’ last month (March 29), recalled being introduced to the iconic girl group through their 1998 movie Spice World in a recent interview.

Speaking on Capital FM’s breakfast show, Eilish said she originally thought the film was “a made-up movie about a group of girls who sang.”

“I thought all the music was written for the movie,” she explained. “I thought all the characters were cast for those characters. I didn’t figure it out until two years ago.”

In another interview on The Ellen Show last week, the singer added: “I watched that movie like 40 times. I remember seeing Spice Girls [were coming back] and thinking, ‘Oh my god, they’re re-enacting the movie.’”

Eilish got the chance to meet one of the band last month when Mel C attended one of her three sold-out shows at London’s O2 Shepherds Bush Empire. The Spice Girl shared a selfie of the pair on her Instagram later, writing: “Billie is an extraordinary talent and seeing young girls screaming with her every move and singing every word of her lyrics, gave me goosebumps.

“Billie Eilish you are a phenomenon and I salute you. I can’t wait to see what the future holds!”

Eilish recently spoke out about how few people can understand what it’s like to be famous. Speaking to Beats 1’s Zane Lowe, she compared the feeling to having a child, losing someone to death, and depression.

“There’s only a few people in the world that can understand this,” she said. “There are some things in life that you just can’t understand unless you see it right in front of you.”
