Bjork speaks after Tibet controversy

Star explains independence comments

Bjork has spoken for the first time about her controversal comments surrounding Tibet made at a gig in China recently.

As previously reported on NME.COM, the Icelandic star’s sensitive comments had caused outrage amongst Chinese officials.

Speaking to Bjork said: “When I said ‘Tibet, Tibet’, I whispered it three times. There was no fuss in the room. It happened afterwards on websites. It shows more than anything that China has become the next superpower in the world. And the issue is: how are they going to deal with Western moral issues like freedom of speech?”

The star added: “Songs like ‘Declare Independence’ for me are about humanity. I stand by what I said.”

Bjork returns to the UK for a sold-out tour, beginning in Manchester on April 11.
