Blur pull out of Big Day Out festival headline slot

The Britpop band were due to head up the Australian event at the start of next year

Blur have pulled out of their headline slot at Australian festival Big Day Out.

The Britpop band were set to head up the festival – which will be touring the country in January and February 2014 – but last night (November 23) posted a message on their Facebook page which stated that they were unhappy with the way the event was being run. The message read:

Devastated to report that Blur won’t be performing at BDO in 2014. It’s a shock that it has come to this. Only 8 weeks to go, the band feels that with the constantly shifting goalposts and challenging conditions of the organisers, they can’t let it drag on any longer and want to make this announcement, to be clear to Blur fans that they won’t be there. We’ve done our very best to work with the organisers and considered every option to make it happen, but they’ve let us down and let everyone else down too.

The event’s other headliners are Arcade Fire and Pearl Jam. Festival investor AJ Maddah – via Music Feeds – spoke to fans on Twitter and commented: “Am trying to find out [what’s happened] myself. Far as I know BDO gave into every demand within the possibility of curfews & public safety.”

He added: “Everyone at BDO is absolutely devastated and confused by this turn of events. All we can do is to replace them and bring you the best show possible.” A replacement is set to be announced as soon as possible. “We’re working on that now. We have a list of targets and are making contact with them all, everyone at BDO will be working through the night to find replacement.”

Adam Zammit, the festival’s CEO, wrote on Twitter the “event is charging ahead despite Blurs action. Announcement and statement soon”.
