Rumours of a dance direction greatly exaggerated, then?....

FATBOY SLIM has said the new BLUR album sounds “more like Clash” than a dance record.

Slim, aka Norman Cook, has been out in Morocco with the three remaining members of Blur, Damon Albarn, Alex James and Dave Rowntree, where they have been finishing work on their new album. Currently untitled, it is due for release early in 2003.

The producer said that the record is not as dance orientated than some people have predicted.

“It’s not dancey,” he told Rolling Stone. “It’s not like they got me in to turn them into a dance band. We’ve been having tons of fun. The only thing I can say is that it sounds more like [/a], [a] on a good day.”

Now his work on that album is all but complete, Fatboy Slim will start work on his own album, also due next year.

He said: “At the moment, I’m going through all the records I bought over the last year and a half to sample. Oh my God, are they mad! I just bought stupid records in LA thrift stores. I’d call it pre-production.

“My main motivational force is just to do something really freaky. If I do something dull, then that would be the end of me. The antithesis of Moby‘s last album – don’t repeat yourself. Don’t play safe. At the moment what I want to do is something completely nuts, so it’ll be either genius or bollocks.”
