Look out for Trinidadian calypso, Asian breakbeat, Turkish folk and Portuguese fado being issued fby Damon Albarn's roster...
BLUR’s DAMON ALBARN is to diversify further beyond the band with the launch of a new record label focusing on ‘World Music’.
The first release from Honest Jon’s will be ‘Mali Music’, recorded by Albarn in collaboration with musicians from the African nation last year. It will appear on April 1. Plans are being made to release records of Trinidadian calypso, Asian breakbeat, Turkish folk and Portuguese fado in the coming months.
Following his immense success over the past 12 months with the [a][/a] project, it is unclear at present if Albarn intends to appear on many of the records.
He said the idea behind the label was to release “any kind of music we want, however disparate it might seem. A good metaphor for it is that it’s like a friend’s record collection, where all sorts of things make sense,” he added.
The label is named after Honest Jon’s record shop of London’s Portobello Road.
The shop owner and co-founder Alan Scholefield said: “We want to put out plenty of classics without being a reissue label, and music from all over the place, without becoming any kind of museum,” Ananova reports.
