Poor performance of 'Coffee + TV' down to chart computer slip-up...
Blur, who headlined T In The Park on Saturday night, are demanding that the charts for last week be recounted because the computers lost data from sales to two major record chains which, they claim, was responsible for the pitiful sales of ‘Coffee + TV’ which limped into the charts at number 11 last week and fell to 18 this week.
Other major and independent labels are calling for a re-assessment of the chart in the light of revelations that new software caused data to be erased from the statistics.
But Millward Brown who compile the official Top 40 will not consider re-running the charts.
The first single from ’13’, the epic ‘Tender’, failed to make the number one slot, stalling at number two. ‘Coffee + TV’ – the second single taken from ’13’ is a more pop orientated single – although not an obvious choice for a single since it’s the first Blur single where Damon has taken a back seat with the vocals handled by Graham Coxon.
Blur were helped along by chart computers a few years back when they went head to head with Oasis, releasing ‘Country House’ the same day as ‘Roll With It’. When it became apparent that Blur were winning the race to number one, Oasis announced that there had been a mistake in the bar codes printed on their single and sales weren’t being registered.
