Damon Albarn says Blur were ‘too young and stupid’ to value their relationship in the past

Blur frontman says throwing away band's relationship would be 'madness'

Damon Albarn has said throwing away Blur‘s relationship as a band would be “madness”.

As reported, the band’s guitarist Graham Coxon recently explained that new Blur album ‘The Magic Whip’ helped him and Albarn “make amends”. Despite being long-term friends, the pair had an often stormy working relationship, and fell out after Coxon left the band during the making of the group’s last studio LP, 2003’s ‘Think Tank’.

In a new interview with Mojo, Damon Albarn explained how the pair’s friendship has developed over the years. He admitted: “It’s been very intense – the record’s got a lot to do with our relationship.

“As you get older, as your families grow up, you realise we were too young and stupid to understand or value what we had or how lucky we were. As people or musicians. We don’t feel like that any more. We realise that to throw away relationships is madness.”

“This is a series of very fortunate events,” he continued. “When I was saying last year I couldn’t see there being [a new Blur album], I genuinely didn’t believe there ever could be.

“None of us are getting any younger. If you do something, it’s gotta fucking count. Otherwise, what are we doing? But we have done it now. So there you go.”

Coxon recently revealed Blur went to counselling sessions to ease tensions in the group before they initially reunited in 2009.

Blur release their new album ‘The Magic Whip’ on April 27.

Yesterday (March 31) the band published a list of their favourite albums, including records by Ellie Goulding, Radiohead, David Bowie and Nick Drake.

Blur recently shared new songs ‘Lonesome Street’ and ‘There Are Too Many Of Us’. The band have already released lead single ‘Go Out’.

The band will headline British Summer Time in London’s Hyde Park on June 20. They have also been announced as a headliner for this year’s Isle Of Wight festival and Benicàssim festival in Spain.

Drummer Dave Rowntree had confirmed that Blur will not be headlining Glastonbury this year.
