Cooper, who plays Jackson Maine in the Academy Award-nominated movie, told The Late Show with Stephen Colbert that he has officially retired Maine’s southern drawl. He will instead sing in his own voice for ‘Shallow’ at the awards show on February 25.
“He’s gone. I’m not gonna try to get him back,” Cooper told Colbert yesterday (February 14). “But it will be me singing.”
Cooper cited his recent impromptu joint performance of ‘Shallow’ with Gaga at her ‘Enigma’ residency showcase in Las Vegas as the reason for this decision.
He said: “That guy certainly isn’t a rock star… I watched the video back… and I just sort of look like this idiot from Philadelphia singing with Lady Gaga… but I was like, ‘Oh, Jackson’s gone.'”
The actor also told Colbert about the difficulty of creating a fake golden gramophone award for A Star is Born. He and Gaga won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for ‘Shallow’ at the Grammy Awards on Sunday (February 10).
