Trump has already confirmed he intends to run again in two years time, but it is currently unknown who the Democrats will put forward as his opponent.
Speaking to the Sunday Times, Springsteen said that was not optimistic about the outcome of the 2020 vote. “I don’t see anyone out there at the moment … the man who can beat Trump, or the woman who can beat Trump,” he said.
“You need someone who can speak some of the same language [as Trump] … and the Democrats don’t have an obvious, effective presidential candidate.”
In the mid-term elections last month (November 6), Republicans kept control of the Senate, but the power balance in the House swung back in Democrats favour. Some political commentators have suggested that swing could mean trouble for the Republicans in the 2020 presidential election.
Meanwhile, Springsteen has confirmed he is working on new music and will be returning to the UK for a new tour next year. Describing the new album in the Times interview, he said: “For lack of a better word, it’s a singer-songwriter album – more of a solo record.”
No tour dates have been confirmed at present but the legendary musician said he would be getting “back to [his] day job” and performing with the E Street Band, following 14 months of performing on Broadway.
Fans will be able to experience that acclaimed Broadway show from the comfort of their own homes later this month. Springsteen On Broadway will be available on Netflix from December 16, while a live album will be released days earlier.
