Cee Lo Green responds to ‘homophobia’ row

Singer had posted an angry tweet to a music journalist

Cee Lo Green is the latest artist to enter a homophobia row after using the word ‘gay’ in a derogatory manner.

The ‘Fuck You’ singer was forced to defend himself after provoking a storm when he responded on Twitter to a review from a music journalist. Critic Andrea Svensson wrote a negative piece on a performance he gave in Minneapolis with Rihanna.

Responding via the social networking site, Green wrote: “I respect your criticism, but be fair! People enjoyed last night! I’m guessing you’re gay? And my masculinity offended you? Well, fuck you!”

Ironically, Svensson is a woman. Although he later deleted the tweet, the episode provoked a backlash, and he felt the need to justify himself, talking to Us Weekly. He said: “At the time I didn’t even know what gender the person was. I was being a little bit outspoken that night, a little outrageous. I always expect people to assume that everything I do is part of my character and sense of humour. I assumed that whoever it was would assume it was all in good fun. It wasn’t taken so well, apparently.”

He continued: “I most certainly am not harboring any sort of negative feeling toward the gay community. I’m one of the most liberal artists that I think you will ever meet, and I pride myself on that. Two of the remaining members that I have on my team on The Voice are proud and outspokenly gay.”
