The video sees the UK singer go back to school and prepare for a fictional prom. Hollywood actress Rose McGowan makes a cameo appearances as a teacher at the school.

Speaking about the video Charli XCX told Billboard: “I was inspired by movies like Jawbreaker and Carrie for the ‘Break The Rules’ video. I never went to prom when I was at school so this was kind of me living out my weird fantasy of what prom would be like in my head. I asked Rose McGowan to be in the video and I never ever thought she would say yes, but she did. And she trashed it. “

‘Break The Rules’ features on the recently announced new album ‘Sucker’. The album will be released on October 5 through Asylum Records and will feature Charli XCX’s Top 10 single ‘Boom Clap’.

‘Sucker’ follows 2013’s ‘True Romance’. To support the release of the album she will play a one-off show at London’s Heaven on October 30.

Speaking to NME about the record earlier this year, Charli XCX said she’d be using the LP to establish herself as a solo artist, after becoming famous for duetting with Iggy Azalea and writing for Icona Pop. “I can write a fucking hit song,” she said. “And I’m going to write some for me now. I feel like as an artist I’ve done so many collaborations now that I think I just want to take this record for myself.”

Underlining her desire to make something which appeals to the same number of people as ‘I Love It’ and ‘Fancy’, she continued: “I’m not making a hipster record that’s very cool and sounds like it was made at the beach. It’s easy for me to make a record like that. I’m making a record that people might fucking hate but I don’t care because I’ve done it the way I want to do it.”

Earlier this year the UK pop star revealed that she worked with Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo and Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend on the record.
