Listen to Charli XCX’s new song ‘5 In The Morning’

The song follows the release of her last two mixtapes

Charli XCX has released a new song titled ‘5 In The Morning’. The track follows on from her two mixtapes ‘Number 1 Angel’ and ‘Pop 2’.

Before the release of the track, the singer took to Twitter to tease fans about the new music. “i am going to release a lot music this year. and a lot of videos. you’re gonna be so fucking sick of me,” she wrote.

‘5 In The Morning’ is a late-night banger that features the lyrics, “I’m going all in/ It’s 5 in the morning, I’m busy balling. I ain’t even stopping, no/ It’s 5 in the morning, I’m so devoted.” You can see her tweet and listen to the new song below.

The track follows on from Charli XCX’s collaboration with Rita Ora, ‘Girls’. The song was heavily criticised for its ‘tone-deaf’ lyrics like: “Sometimes, I just wanna kiss girls, girls, girls/Red wine, I just wanna kiss girls, girls, girls”, which many felt undermined the queer community, suggesting that girls only kiss other girls when drunk.

Charli XCX later responded to the criticism, saying, “I think the conversation and dialogue around this song is really important.”

“I could totally relate to the conversation that was being had. Of course, the intention of the song was never to hurt anybody.

“Rita had never confirmed her sexuality. She basically felt like she had to come out [because of this]. I know that Rita’s had extremely meaningful relationships with both men and women,” the singer added.

“She really does have every right to tell her story because she’s not doing it from an exploitative viewpoint… I don’t understand why her story is less valid than anybody else’s.”

She wants to move on from the controversy in a positive way: “I just really want to learn from this situation…we can all learn from this conversation.”
