Charli XCX has released a new video for her latest track ‘5 in the Morning’. The track follows on from her two mixtapes ‘Number 1 Angel’ and ‘Pop 2’.
The singer released the track late last month (May 31), after tweeting that she was ‘going to release a lot music this year. and a lot of videos. “you’re gonna be so fucking sick of me,” she wrote.
The pop star played a ‘Pop 2’ show at her Village Underground last week (June 21). Reviewing the gig, NME wrote: “Constantly taking bold creative steps, as well as showing herself as a true fan and champion of her musical peers with the spotlight she shines on them through collaborations and bringing them out a shows, XCX is the present, and the future, of pop music.”
She also recently appeared on the Rita Ora track ‘Girls’ which was later criticized for its “tone-deaf lyrics”. Many felt the song undermined the queer community by suggesting that girls only kiss other girls when drunk.
“I think the conversation and dialogue around this song is really important,” Charli XCX said of the critiques. “I could totally relate to the conversation that was being had. Of course, the intention of the song was never to hurt anybody.”
“Rita had never confirmed her sexuality. She basically felt like she had to come out [because of this],” she added. “I know that Rita’s had extremely meaningful relationships with both men and women.
“She really does have every right to tell her story because she’s not doing it from an exploitative viewpoint… I don’t understand why her story is less valid than anybody else’s.”
