‘Black Mirror”s Charlie Brooker on his love for ‘furiously positive’ Idles

The 'Black Mirror' creator is a big fan of the Bristol punks

Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker has spoken about his love for Bristol band Idles.

The screenwriter tweeted about the band earlier this year, sharing the video for their song ‘Danny Nedelko’ and calling them the “most uplifting thing I’ve seen for about three years.”

Now, in an interview with NME, Brooker has expanded on what he loves about the group. “Apart from anything else, they’re funny,” he said. “There is something about positive punk that I thought,  ‘Why hasn’t..? Hold on, that’s a new thing, isn’t it? How comes no one’s done that?'”

He continued: “If you listen to a song like ‘Danny Nedelko’ or ‘Television’, [singer Joe Talbot is] so fucking angry about being positive. He’s so furiously happy – so furiously positive in the way he shouts, ‘Unity!’ He shouts ‘Unity!’ through gritted teeth and there’s something very life-affirming about that.”

Idles released their latest album ‘Joy As An Act Of Resistance‘ in August. The record was competing with Eminem for the top spot in the Official UK Albums Chart in the mid-weeks but eventually charted at Number Five.

The band recently appeared on Later… With Jools Holland for the first time. NME dubbed it “cacophonous and chaotic, batshit but brilliant” and declared a performance of “immigration anthem” ‘Danny Nedelko’ as feeling “like history in the making.”

Meanwhile, Brooker and the Black Mirror cast and crew have broken down each episode of the dystopian TV series in a new book, called Inside Black Mirror. The new release will reveal the inspiration behind each storyline as well as their reflections on the show.
