Charlotte Church makes organ donation plea

Singer encourages public to sign up to the Organ Donor Register

Charlotte Church has made a plea to the public for more people to sign up to the Organ Donor Register, after initially raising awareness of the need of a family friend’s young son for a liver transplant.

Church herself signed up to the Register after finding out that Finlay Careless, the 20 month-old son of Sarah Howell, a family friend of the singer from Swansea is in need of the transplant as he has suffered from liver disease since birth, reports BBC News.

“I wanted to bring awareness about Finlay,” the Welsh singer, who is a mother herself, said. “I can’t imagine what it’s like for a mum to sit and wait [for an organ transplant for their child]. Finlay has been fine so far but a child could die waiting.

“It’s really easy [to sign up for a donor card] and everyone should do it,” she continued. “When you think about it, you could save a little innocent child’s life – even an adult, who could be someone’s dad or sister.

“Fair enough if you have certain religious beliefs, but if it affected your own family, you would do it without any hesitation. It would mean so much to a family.”

Members of the public can sign up to be a potential organ donor online by filling in a form on the UK Transplant website.
