Christine And The Queens shares new ‘Girlfriend’ video, inspired by 1930s builders

The track is the first to be taken from the French star's forthcoming second album

Christine And The Queens has shared a new video for ‘Girlfriend’.

The French star released the track, which is the first to be taken from the follow-up to her debut album ‘Chaleur Humaine’, last week (May 17).

Directed by Jordan Bahat, the video’s concept was developed by Christine – aka Héloïse Letissier – and was inspired by “Charles Ebbets’ photos from the 1930s of builders relaxing on girders 60 stories up in the air”, according to a press release. Choreography references from West Side Story and Michael Jackson’s ‘Bad’ are also said to have influenced the video, which you can watch below.

Christine And The Queens said in a press release: “The message is both simple and radical. Simple because the video relies on energy and an effective use of choreography: more physical, sensual, and assertive. Radical in terms of its aesthetic: here, the gang concept blurs the lines between ballerina and thug, as was often the case in American musicals such as West Side Story.”

Of the song, she added: “The song is like a story you tell to your friends. Chris is the gang leader, the kind of person you look for and listen to; he does what he wants, perched up high somewhere, dangling above the emptiness.”
