Club NME Launches in New York

CSS miss out but the party goes on

Club NME New York launched in spectacular style last night (November 2), with performances from some of music’s biggest buzz bands of the moment.

Sao Paolo’s CSS cancelled their eagerly anticipated set at the last minute due to a sore throat suffered by Lovefoxx, disappointing much of the crowd, although judging the numbers who came out to see The Sounds, The Horrors and The Office, it was obvious CSS weren’t the only attraction.

The party was uniquely located at the colourful Harmony Palace restaurant in Chinatown, giving a ‘Chinese wedding’ feeling to the event, right down to the ornate pillars, red tablecloths and tuxedo-wearing Chinese wedding compere who introduced the bands.

The party saw a steady flow of New York’s local scenesters throughout the night including James Iha, The Bravery, New York DJ trio The MisShapes, Ash’s Mark Hamilton and ‘Last Days’ actor Michael Pitt.

Opening act The Sounds had a serious whistle-stop tour, having flown in for the show from Paris, via Miami, and then heading uptown for a second show directly after their set.

Club NME New York was also the first performance by The Horrors since the previous night’s Nylon magazine party, during which singer Faris Badwan was attacked mid-set onstage. Aside from nursing some “bruised knuckles”, Badwan shrugged off the punch-up, saying he found the whole episode “quite funny”.

And unlike the previous evening’s fisticuffs, The Horrors show went off without incident, as the curious crowd was noticeably tamer than the night before.

He may have suffered an attack the night before, but Badwan showed no signs of trauma as a result of the incident as he climbed speaker stacks and stormed the crowd during the band’s set.
