Battles get things jumping at Coachella

Day One gets off to a storming start

Battles kicked off day one of the Coachella Festival with a storming set in the packed Gobi tent today (April 25).

The New York math rockers got the crowd dancing even in the midday heat with their punctuated guitar riffs and syncopated rhythms.

The quartet didn’t say much more than “thank you”, during their set, but they managed to keep the crowd enthralled with their knob twisting and laptop-driven beats.

Shortly afterwards, Jens Lekman played a much mellower set in the Mojave tent backed by an all-female band as well as a horn section.

A star-studded crowd including members of Shout Out Louds, supermodel Agyness Deyn and actor Danny Masterson – many of whom attended the NME Awards USA earlier this week – danced to the Swedish singer’s set.

Meanwhile, Tegan and Sara were plagued by technical difficulties during their early evening set on the main Coachella stage.

“This kind of clusterfuck happens to us every day,” Sara said, but the band recovered nicely and went on to play several tracks from their latest album ‘The Con’.
