Zach Braff discusses Coldplay and Bon Iver-featuring soundtrack to new movie ‘Wish I Was Here’

The actor and director has given track-by-track commentary to the star-studded soundtrack

Zach Braff has discussed getting the likes of Coldplay and Bon Iver to contribute to the soundtrack to his new movie, Wish I Was Here, reports Rolling Stone.

In an audio commentary the actor and director talks about every track on the OST, revealing his intentions behind the accompanying album and how he got artists to collaborate with him on the project. The soundtrack features The Shins, Cat Power, Paul Simon and more.

“In the last 10 years since the Garden State soundtrack came out, iTunes has happened and the music stores are all gone,” Braff explained. “So in order to do something special with this one, I thought, ‘What about finding as much original content as possible, stuff that isn’t available everywhere else.’ We wanted to fill this soundtrack with stuff that is just special and unique to the film. So I just asked some of my favorite bands, ‘Would you consider watching the film and then writing the song that is the piece of art that came out of you after you’ve seen this movie, which is funny but also quite emotional?’ What a great, fun collaboration.”

Speaking about Cat Power’s collaboration with Coldplay, he revealed that Chris Martin had suggested getting a woman to sing the title track that he had written. “I loved it being a woman singing the song,” Braff commented. “Chris and I were on the phone, and we both kind of simultaneously said, ‘Cat Power….’ It’s just a beautiful, beautiful track. I love it. I’m just so honored that those two powerhouse musicians collaborated together because they loved the movie so much.”

Wish I Was Here follows Braff’s much lauded directorial debut Garden State, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. You can stream the entire soundtrack and his track-by-track commentary at Entertainment Weekly. The film, which follows a struggling actor raising his children on a limited budget, is released in the US on July 25. No UK release date has been confirmed as yet.
