MARTIN MAKES THE SHORTLIST

The Coldplay frontman is one of 20 'list makers' who will decide on this year's winner...

COLDPLAY’s CHRIS MARTIN is to join the list of 20 judges for the 2003 SHORTLIST MUSIC PRIZE – the American equivalent of the MERCURY MUSIC PRIZE .

The Neptunes , Gwen Stefani, Mos Def, [/a] and Tori Amos are also among the ‘list makers’ who will nominate acts for the award based on their artistic creativity rather than commercial success.

This year’s third annual ceremony will be held at Los Angeles’ Wiltern Theatre on October 16.

There are plans for a tie-in tour and compilation CD to promote the competition won last year by [a]’s debut album ‘In Search Of…’ .

The nominees must have released an album between July 1 2002 and June 30 2003 and not have sold more than 500,000 albums in the US. The list-makers will select the winner on the evening of the awards.

“The listmakers seem to understand what we’re trying to do better and better every year – we get fewer nominations from artists who have sold a ton of records and we get more and more with a remarkable range and diversity,” Greg Spotts , marketing consultant for the Shortlist Music Prize, told Billboard.
