Girl Talk incites raucous dance party at Wanderlust

And Common fills in for Michael Franti

Common kicked things into high gear at the Wanderlust music and yoga festival, stepping in at the last minute for Michael Franti & Spearhead who were forced to cancel their Saturday night (July 25) performance because Franti had to undergo an emergency appendectomy.

Performing on the Gold Coast stage at the top of a mountain in picturesque Squaw Valley near Lake Tahoe, the Chicago rapper came out swinging, singing ‘Breathe In, Breathe Out’ while bounding across the stage.

“It feels good to be here in Lake Tahoe, such a beautiful place,” he said. “This is the first year of Wanderlust and it’s an incredible event. We could feel the energy as soon as we drove up. I hope everyone came to play at this social, music and yoga event.”

Common gave a shout out to Franti, dedicating a song to him and asking the audience to send healing energy his way and to sign a giant get-well card that hung in the lobby of the tramway that carried festival-goers up and down the mountain.

The rapper also jokingly accused several young ladies in the audience of checking him out, before inviting a girl on stage to serenade her on ‘Come Close’. “I’m tired of the fast lane, I want you to have my last name,” he sang while gazing into her eyes.

Later in the evening, Girl Talk incited a massive dance party with his mash-up DJ antics. Taking the stage with more than a dozen dancers, the Pittsburgh DJ, aka Gregg Gillis, riled up the crowd by mixing MGMT with Tone Loc and Queen with Michael Jackson.

Beach balls, balloons and confetti flew through the air as nearly the entire crowd jumped up and down. Toward the end of his set, Gillis climbed on top of his DJ table and stage dove into the crowd, which caused people to cheer even louder.
