Man forced to dance to Daft Punk song during Currys job interview

Alan Bacon complains after being made to dance to 'Around The World' in Cardiff

Currys has apologised to a university graduate after he was made to dance to a Daft Punk song during a job interview with the retailer.

Alan Bacon recently graduated from the University of South Wales and applied to work in a Cardiff branch of Currys immediately afterward. Upon attending his interview, however, he was asked to dance to Daft Punk’s 1997 single ‘Around The World’. Bacon has said it was part of a “dance off” which he and eight other applicants were expected to compete in for the position.

“I think everyone initially thought it was a joke,” Bacon, from Newport, South Wales told The Mirror. “But they were serious. All professionalism went out of the window. I’d spent the past week researching the company and looking forward to being able to express myself and talk about what I love doing. But I just felt so embarrassed and uncomfortable. I ended up dancing to ‘Around the World’ by Daft Punk, doing rubbish robotics in my suit in front of a group of strangers.”

The 21-year-old, who has applied for 300 jobs since graduating from university, continues: “It was so degrading, but I am desperate for work, so I just smiled and got on with it. I told my dad it was like a scene out of The Office. I’ve been to quite a few job interviews and have never had to do anything like it before. Another middle aged guy looked really upset as he danced to a rap song.”

Bacon was unsuccessful with his moves and later received a phone call where he was told “he wouldn’t fit in with the team”. A spokesperson for Currys confirmed that applicants had been made to dance in their interview: “Regrettably, the store in question did not follow our official recruitment processes on this specific occasion.”

“We are very sorry to those interviewees impacted on this occasion and would like to invite them back to attend an official interview where they will be given a proper opportunity to demonstrate how they can contribute to our business.”

Alan declined the offer of a repeat interview.
