Stephen Colbert claims MTV banned Daft Punk from appearing on ‘The Colbert Report’

Comedian says that MTV have booked 'Random Access Memories' duo to perform at 2013 VMAs

Daft Punk failed to make an advertised TV appearance on US late-night satirical show The Colbert Report last night (August 6) after reportedly being banned by MTV.

Daft Punk’s appearance on The Colbert Report was confirmed by Comedy Central, the cable network that airs the show, however the French duo failed to appear as planned. This was, according to Colbert, because MTV banned the French musicians from appearing on his show as they have already booked them to play at their forthcoming Video Music Awards (VMAs). Had they appeared, it would have been Daft Punk’s first TV appearance since releasing their new album ‘Random Access Memories’ earlier this year.

“Here’s the story: it’s a true story,” Colbert explained. “We booked click and clack over here about a month ago. This network is owned by Viacom, which is also the owner of MTV. Apparently, Daft Punk are going to make a surprise appearance on the MTV Video Music Awards. Don’t tell anyone, because fun fact: no one told me until two hours ago.” Instead, Colbert danced along to ‘Get Lucky’ with a number of famous faces including Matt Damon, Jimmy Fallon, Henry Kissinger, the cast of Breaking Bad and Jeff Daniels. Robin Thicke also performed his single ‘Blurred Lines’, a song that Colbert dubbed “the new song of the summer”.

As reported yesterday (August 6), Kanye West will perform at the MTV VMAs this year. The rapper joins Lady Gaga on the line-up for the annual bash, which will take place on August 25 at Brooklyn’s Barclays Centre in New York.
