D’Angelo and The Vanguard cover Prince’s ‘She’s Always In My Hair’ for Spotify Sessions – listen

Singer also performs tracks from recent album 'Black Messiah'

D’Angelo and his band The Vanguard have released a 32-minute live set specially recorded for Spotify. Scroll down to listen.

The Spotify Sessions performance included three cuts taken from recent album ‘Black Messiah’: ‘Betray My Heart’ (which bleeds into D’s 2000 track ‘Spanish Joint’), ‘Really Love’ and ‘The Door’, as well as a rendition of Prince’s 1985 B-side ‘She’s Always In My Hair’. D’Angelo previously recorded a version of the song for the Scream 2 soundtrack back in 1997.

‘Black Messiah’ was released last December, some 14 years after D’Angelo’s last album ‘Voodoo’. In his review, NME’s Angus Batey wrote: “The good – no, the astonishing – news is that this constantly engrossing record repays a decade and a half’s faith and patience. D’Angelo has scuttled down the digital chimney with an early Christmas gift with long-lasting rewards: not just one of the best records of 2014, but one that will stay with you throughout next year, too.”

The singer toured the UK in February as part of his ‘Second Coming Tour’ and is due to return on July 13 for a show at London’s Roundhouse venue. Prince himself gave a rendition of ‘She’s Always In My Hair’ last September during an apperance on The Arsenio Hall Show.
