David Bowie plays have spiked 2,700% on Spotify following news of his death
Plays of David Bowie tracks on streaming service Spotify spiked more than 2,700% following the announcement of his death earlier today (January 11).
Fans have been taking to the service to stream Bowie’s back catalogue, with the sizeable spike showing in worldwide figures despite the release of Bowie’s new album ‘Blackstar’ on Friday. The album – which already appears on the streaming service – would have caused a spike in listening for Bowie in its own right prior to Bowie’s passing.
Bowie’s most-played tracks on the streaming service to date (as of January 11) are as follows:
1. Under Pressure (65m plays)
2. Space Oddity (31m plays)
3. Life On Mars? (30m plays)
4. Heroes (21m plays)
5. Let’s Dance (18m plays)
Bowie passed away yesterday following an 18 month battle with cancer. He released his latest album ‘Blackstar’ last week (January 8) on his 69th birthday.
An official statement, published on Bowie’s Facebook page, reads: “David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”
Stars have rushed to pay tribute to the iconic artist, while fans are planning a party in Brixton, London, to celebrate his life.
