The single is available for download from tomorrow
David Bowie has launched new single ‘Blackstar’, alongside a ‘short film’ to accompany the lengthy track.
‘Blackstar’ premiered on Sky Atlantic at 8.45pm tonight (November 19), ahead of the second episode of The Last Panthers and was made available on Bowie’s YouTube channel shortly afterwards. It will be available for download from tomorrow (November 20).
Johan Renck – the director of the series – also directed the single’s accompanying short film, while the track features as title track on the series. Renck said of Bowie’s work:
“I was looking for one of the icons of my youth to write the music for the title sequence, but was presented with a God. [Bowie’s] first response was precise, engaged and curious.”
Bowie had previously revealed a clip of the track ‘Blackstar’, and also unveiled his album artwork earlier today (November 19, see album cover above). His 25th studio album is titled as a single letter black star symbol, and pronounced ‘Blackstar’, and due on his 69th birthday, January 8.
Bowie is also co-writing a stage show based on ‘The Man Who Fell To Earth’, entitled Lazarus, which will feature Dexter star Michael C Hall and is also expected to contain new music.
Isle Of Wight Festival promoter John Giddings recently suggested Bowie has retired from touring, saying:
“He [Bowie] has decided to retire and, like Phil Collins, you can’t demand these people go out there again and again and again. I’m really pleased and proud that the last show he ever did in the UK was the 2004 Isle Of Wight Festival.”
