Death Cab For Cutie member explains why Ben Gibbard walked off stage at gig

Incident took place at gig in South Carolina last week

Death Cab For Cutie member Nick Harmer has explained why frontman Ben Gibbard recently walked off the stage mid-set at one of the band’s gigs last week.

The US band were playing a gig with Chvrches at the Volvo Car Stadium in Charleston, South Carolina last Wednesday (June 15) when he appeared to depart the stage during a performance of ‘Soul Meets Body’. Video footage (beneath) saw Gibbard take his earpiece out and guitar off before shoving his mic stand to the floor.

Now bassist Harmer has detailed the situation to Billboard. “It was the last 20 seconds of the last song and all of Ben’s equipment failed at the exact kind of unrelated moment there was a giant fight in front of us,” he said.

Harmer added: “We would’ve finished the song but we’re all feeling a little skittish after Orlando and things were just – we weren’t sure what was happening. Suddenly, there was this moment in the crowd where we don’t see this kind of energy happen in front of us”.

“It’s kind of scary, so we stop as a band thinking somebody’s hurt or something’s happening, but that also just happened to coincide with the same other thing that was happening with Ben and all of his gear problems.”

Also during the gig, Chvrches’ Lauren Mayberry made a cameo during Death Cab’s performance of ‘Plans’ track ‘Brothers on a Hotel Bed’. Watch footage of that beneath.
