Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons faces new rape allegations

Simmons had previously been accused of sexual misconduct and rape by more than a dozen women

Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons has been accused of rape by another woman, it has been reported.

Allegations of sexual misconduct and rape have been levelled at Simmons by multiple women since November 2017. He responded at the time by admitting to some instances of “inappropriate conduct” and apologised “for the instances of thoughtlessness in my relationships with women,” but also “vehemently denied” allegations of non-consensual sexual interactions.

Now, Alexia Norton Jones has accused the music mogul of raping her in his Manhattan apartment after they had been out on a date together in November 1990, as Variety reports. “It was such a fast attack,” she said. “I remember being pushed up against a wall. He pulled my dress up. I must have said no seven to 10 times, and then I acquiesced.”

Jones said she reported the incident to the New York Police Department last spring, but it was outside the statute of limitations. She said that she felt unable to tell anyone at the time because she and Simmons had the same friends. She added that she is not trying to sue Simmons, but wanted to share her story in solidarity with the other women who have come forward with claims against him.

In a statement, Simmons denied the claims. “At no time did she share these feelings about her first sexual encounter with me, which took place roughly 28 years ago,” he said. “I have taken multiple lie detector tests that affirm I never sexually assaulted anyone. Alexia and I dated, were intimate and attended multiple events together after she alleges the incident occurred in 1990.

He continued: “I considered her a friend for all these years and continue to have a warm relationship with members of her family. I believe we last spoke in 2006 when she called to express her disappointment over the fact that I had not attended an event honouring her father.”

Simmons’ representative also shared a statement from his driver, Kenneth L. Jennings, who said: “I recall driving Mr. Simmons and Alexia Norton Jones on about 10 to 12 dates in or about 1990. Their relationship lasted approximately five months.” Jones disputed she had ever dated Simmons. Her therapist, meanwhile, confirmed she had spoken with her about the alleged assault in the early ’90s.
