Def Leppard have announced plans to sponsor a Welsh youth rugby team.
Cardiff based Rhiwbina under-10s [pictured] have teamed up with the band through one of their coaches, Richard Proctor, who worked on artwork on three albums for the veteran rockers. Lead singer Joe Elliott said he was delighted to sponsor the team and put their logo on the team shirts despite initially thinking the band were sponsoring a football team.
He told BBC News: “Richard is a long-time friend of mine and he works closely with the band. When he told me he needed a sponsor, I jumped at the chance, only afterwards did I realise it was a rugby and not a footy team! Like all things with our logo on it, I think it looks spectacular. I’m not sure it’s going to guarantee a winning team every week though, but at least they will look cool.”
The band are big football fans various members follow the teams of their home city, Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United. They are not the first band to become involved in sponsorship deals in the area. The Super Furry Animals once had their logo emblazoned across Cardiff City football shirts.
