DEPECHE MODE kicked off their ‘EXCITER’ tour in QUEBEC last night (June 11) with a two-hour set at the COLISEE PEPSI.
‘Enjoy The Silence’ was one of the highlights of the set that drew heavily on their ‘Violator’/’Songs Of Faith…’ period, as well as introducing fans to their new album ‘Exciter’.
Creeping quietly into the set with an instrumental intro followed by an acoustic ‘Dream On’, which saw the band gradually arrive on stage, the track built up until frontman Dave Gahan joined the band onstage, sending the audience wild.
The set seemed to be paced more slowly during the first half, welling to a powerful climax, with ‘Personal Jesus’ taking the band off the stage and into the encore.
Gahan, dressed in black trousers and jacket, was in strong voice, and the crowd was ecstatic, despite the long absence of the band from the country. The group reciprocated, smiling throughout the gig and exchanging comments with the audience.
Martin Gore, dressed in a white T-shirt with feathers on the shoulder, black trousers and a golden belt with ‘Exciter’ on it, took the lead on three songs – ‘Bottom Line’ and ‘Breathe’ in the middle of the set, and an emotive acoustic rendering of ‘Home’ as the first song of the encore, which then wound up with ‘Clean’, a rapturously-received ‘Black Celebration’ and ended with ‘Never Let Me Down Again’.
The band had minimal trappings on the stage, with projections on a large screen for their backdrop, and made use of the lights, turning the spotlight frequently on the audience, and seeming happy that they were already familiar with the words.
At one hour and fifty-five minutes (to be precise!) the set didn’t seem long enough to satisfy the fans, many of whom are travelling to see them play again in Montreal on June 15.
The set list was:
intro – ‘Easy Tiger & Dream On’
‘Dead Of Night’
‘Walking In My Shoes’
‘When The Body Speaks’
‘Waiting For The Night’
(Dave leaves stage)
‘Bottom Line’ (Martin)
‘Enjoy The Silence’
‘I Feel You’
‘In Your Room’
‘It’s No Good’
‘I Feel Loved’
‘Never Let Me Down Again’
They move on to Ottowa Corel Centre tomorrow night (June 13), and continue with the North American tour. For full tour details, see the band’s official website, www.depechemode.com.
