Diplo has called up a new trio of artists to assist on his new single, ‘Doctor Pepper’.
The track features Riff Raff, OG Maco and K-Pop singer CL, who is set to release her first English language album soon. The song comes after Diplo recently told producer Rick Rubin he was trying to “retire” his solo material.
Talking to The Fader about the meaning behind the song’s chorus, CL said: “Diplo canceled a session on me, and I was so mad at him. I was drinking a can of Dr. Pepper and wrote the song so I could go home as soon as possible. Diplo ended up loving it!” You can listen to the track below.
The producer also discussed getting CL involved on the track, saying: “CL and I go back a long way, from the first time YG [Entertainment, South Korean entertainment company] contacted me about six years ago. I’ve been active in CL’s first full-length album, mostly trying to find a right balance between glossy K-pop attitude and keeping CL positioned where she belongs—as the baddest coolest female out right now.”
He continued: “‘Doctor Pepper’ is something that might not register that well with actual K-pop, seeing as it’s a straight Atlanta-style rap record, but the net around K-pop is so wide that it can be anything with confidence and style. That’s what CL brings to it.”
Meanwhile, Diplo and Skrillex were recently stopped by police when they tried to DJ from a dressing room window in Amsterdam.
The moment was documented by Diplo on Instagram. He explained what happened by saying: “Set up turntables outside our dressing room after kings day fest and played music out the window. Cops turned it down cause we stopped traffic.”
