Dizzee Rascal gears up for first US tour in four years

The rapper speaks to NME.COM about the jaunt and new projects

Dizzee Rascal is gearing up to kick off his first US tour in four years tomorrow (May 8), and NME.COM caught up with the Arctic Monkeys-collaborating rapper.

Rascal‘s latest album ‘Maths + English’ came out in the UK last year, but was just released Stateside on April 29. Rascal explained the reason for the delay.

“When you put yourself out in America you really need to be there,” he said. “That’s how the delay came about. Now I’m here I get to promote it and be around properly and have some presence.”

Rascal said he’s looking forward to performing for new audiences on his co-headlining tour with El-P. “I’m quite excited to see how it’s gonna go down. I think I’ve probably got a new audience. I’ll reintroduce myself to America. It’ll be like a little discovery,” he said.

As for touring with Definitive Jux label-mate El-P, Rascal said, “He’s cool, man. I met him last month and we get on well.”

Meanwhile, Rascal said he’s been working on material for a new album. “I’m working on my fourth album,” he said. “It might come out next year but I ain’t making no promises.”

He’s also been working with new bands on his own label, Dirtee Stank. “I’m putting out a group called the Newham Generals,” he said. “They’re like a black Prodigy and they’re really exciting.”

The busy rapper also revealed that he just finished shooting the video for ‘Dance With Me’, a collaboration with solo artist/producer Calvin Harris, which he said will be released in June.
