The hip hop star, nominated for two awards, will be serving his 15-day sentence for driving without a licence, because he wants to "set the proper example"...

DMX’s publicist has said that he intends to forgo the chance to attend the GRAMMY Awards on Wednesday (February 21), and will instead begin the prison sentence he was due to start two weeks ago.

The rapper, who is nominated in two categories at the Awards, was due to begin a 15-day sentence at Erie County Correctional Facility, Alden, New York on February 7, after pleading guilty to driving without a licence, but failed to turn up because he was doing promotional duties for his forthcoming film, ‘Exit Wounds’, which co-stars Steven Seagal, in Los Angeles. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and according to his lawyer he was again due to surrender himself last Friday (February 16), when filming commitments were over, but failed to do so.

His publicist Angelo Ellerbee told [url=] on Friday that he wanted to “set the proper example” by missing out on the Grammys to serve his time.

“This is the first year he has been nominated in two categories, but he understands he’s a person that is admired by millions and he wants to set the proper example.”

His lawyer was unable to confirm to whether or not the rapper, who is nominated for Best Hip Hop Album for ‘…And Then There Was X’ and Best Rap Solo Performance for ‘Party Up’, would turn himself in early this week and miss out on the awards at the Staples Center, Los Angeles or not.

The jail sentence, the maximum for the offence, was imposed after DMX pleaded guilty to driving without a licence on the Kensington Expressway, New York on March 3. If he is of good behaviour, he is expected to serve nine or ten days.
