Dolly Parton on goddaughter Miley Cyrus: ‘I know she’s thought this all through’

Former 'Hannah Montana' star Cyrus has become a provocative and controversial figure in recent months

Dolly Parton has shared her views on her famous goddaughter Miley Cyrus, insisting the young singer has “thought this all through”.

Cyrus has courted controversy in recent months, first by twerking onstage with Robin Thicke at September’s MTV Video Music Awards, and then by unveiling a video for her single ‘Wrecking Ball’ in which she appears naked and is seen licking a sledgehammer provocatively.

However, in an interview with the Evening Standard, country legend Parton spoke out in defence of her 20-year-old goddaughter. “I’ve loved her through the years and watched her grow up, and I’ve seen how smart she is and how talented she is,” Parton said. “I don’t think people really realise yet what a great singer and writer she really is.”

Parton also insisted she feels no need to step in and offer Cyrus career advice, saying: “She’s just trying to find her own place and wings and learn to fly. If she needs my opinion on something I will surely give it and there have been times we’ve talked. But I would never dream of calling her and saying, ‘Well why are you doing this?’ or, ‘You shouldn’t do this or that’.”

Parton later added: “I know that she has thought this all through. We’ll let her go and do her own thing.”

Last month (October), Parton referenced her famous goddaughter while performing a rap on a US talk show. “Hey Miley, I’ve got your wrecking balls right here!” Parton rapped while gesturing towards her famously ample chest.
